The video clip shows a Dusky dolphin with a new born calf at the edge of the breakwater at Aramoana, near Dunedin. The dolphin and calf was spotted by Josh Russell, who was undertaking his work experience week with the Coastal Otago DOC Youth Development Programme. Josh was with DOC Ranger Graeme Loh, out at Aramoana monitoring threatened Lepidium plants when they spotted the dolphins. The new born dolphin was being guided through the basics by its mother -- basically how to swim, breath, stay close, and swim straight when it met its first obstacle in life -- the Aramoana Mole. It got stuck a couple of times on the breakwater, but luckily Graeme and Josh were there to put the newborn back into the water (several times) to continue its all important lessons with Mum. Thankfully it finally got the hang of things and mother and calf headed offshore. www.doc.govt.nz/duskydolphin
